“Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1
Faith is the substance of hope. It is what hope is built on. Without the foundation of faith, there is no hope, only wishful thinking. There are many things that I do not understand, and have not seen, but still place hope in because I have faith that they exist beyond my own vision.
The “things not seen” are the things where to all appearances there is nothing there. Did you know that, according to scientists, there is more “nothing” than there is something? 74% of the universe is made up of what is called dark energy. Nothing there. Another 22 % is made of dark matter, particles that we cannot see. Only 4 % is baryonic matter which makes up the stuff that we call something. But, even the something is mostly nothing since the atoms that all the somethings are made of consist mostly of empty space. The electric fields created by the subatomic particles create an illusion of being solid, but the reality is that even you and I are made up of more nothing than something. Think about that for a bit!
What is really fascinating is what goes on in all this unseen nothing. There are constantly “virtual” particles popping in and out of existence creating a theoretical energy in the space of a pin head that far exceeds the energy contained in all the power plants and nuclear weapons of the world. That gives us some inkling of God’s invisible power, the unimaginable capability of “things not seen”, the source of all hope.
